Low-Price Purchase Incentive - Introduction of a punishment system

for illegal rebate-giving and taking practices

Despite severe objection of the pharmaceutical industry, 'low-price purchase incentive,' a drug price policy to provide incentives for medical institutions and pharmacies in case of low price purchase of drugs, will be carried out in the coming October. If drug makers, as well as doctors, are accused of illegal rebate practices, they will suffer more disadvantages.

The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs determined a plan for 'transparency in drug transactions and drug price system,' focusing on such contents. Through the plan, the ministry expressed that drug prices will decrease next year based on 'weighted average price by item' reported by medical institutions, pharmacies, and drug providers.

Moreover, the ministry announced that hospitals, clinics, or pharmacies would be punished with imprisonment of one year or less or a fine of 30 million won or less if they are accused of illegal rebate-taking practices.
